Microfluidic Strategies for the Design and Optimization of Advanced Drug Delivery Systems
Abstract of the PhD project:
This PhD project explores microfluidic technologies as versatile tools for the design, optimization, and characterization of advanced drug delivery systems (DDS). The research will address injectable and nanoscale formulations whose performance is influenced by manufacturing and flow phenomena. Microfluidic platforms will be used to ensure controlled formulation processes, enabling fine-tuning of critical parameters like size distribution, structure, encapsulation efficiency, and rheology. Experiments will be complemented by fluid dynamics modeling to investigate transport and release mechanisms under biologically relevant conditions. The project is designed to adapt to different delivery systems, including nanostructured and polymer-based carriers, allowing the focus to evolve based on experimental outcomes and emerging opportunities. Overall, the aim is to develop rational design principles linking process parameters, physicochemical properties, and functional performance, with implications for translational and clinical applications.
