PhD project Title:

Developing sustainable synthetic approaches in the pharmaceutical field

Abstract of the PhD project:

In the last decades, ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have gained increasing popularity. The tunability of their chemical structures make them adaptable to a wide range of applications. The ionic character and the wide electrochemical window of these solvents make them suitable for electrochemical applications. In recent years, there has been a significant renaissance in electrochemistry, particularly organic electrosynthesis, thanks to its low environmental impact and high efficiency. Unlike traditional synthetic techniques, electrochemistry offers a reduced use of toxic solvents and chemical reagents, as electrons act as the main ‘reactant’, leading to a lower production of harmful by-products and facilitating the treatment of chemical waste. With these aspects in mind, my project aims to investigate the use of ILs and DESs as electrolytes in electrosynthesis reactions to produce compounds of potential pharmaceutical interest. In particular, I will focus on optimising the electrosynthesis pathway by fully exploiting the potential of ILs and DESs in this research area.
