PhD project Title:

Hydrogen sulfide-based drugs in cardiovascular and cardiometabolic diseases

Abstract of the PhD project:

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death globally and their treatment represents a challenging and timely issue. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is an endogenous gasotransmitter endowed with pleiotropic effects. At physiological levels, it regulates the homeostasis of several systems, including the cardiovascular one. Many studies demonstrated that H2S deficiency is strongly associated to many cardiovascular and cardiometabolic diseases, ranging from hypertension to atherosclerosis and type 2 diabetes mellitus. The aim of this project is to explore the pathophysiological roles of H2S in major cardiovascular and cardiometabolic diseases and to investigate the potential therapeutic perspectives for drugs acting on the “H2S system”.
